Senegal aims for Gold and the Olympic Games

Senegal began its African campaign with the 23rd African Athletics Championships, which take place from June 21 to 26 in Douala, Cameroon. Nineteen athletes are participating in this event, with the aim of surpassing the three medals won in the previous edition in 2022.

According to the vice-president of the Senegalese Athletics Federation, Bara Thiam, athletes are aiming not only for medals, but also for performances to qualify for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

The Senegalese delegation is made up of 13 boys and 6 girls, accompanied by 5 supervisors. Thiam particularly mentioned the presence of promising athletes such as Louis François Mendy (110 meters hurdles), already qualified for Paris 2024, Saly Sarr (length), Cheikh Tidiane Diouf (400 meters flat), Mamadou Sarr (100 meters) and the 4×100 meter relay team, all in an ascending phase according to him.

Thiam expressed his confidence by affirming that “the Senegalese Athletics Federation is very confident about the chances of medals for our athletes at the African Championships with performances allowing them to participate in the Paris Olympics”. He also added that this edition is particularly important because it offers athletes the opportunity to qualify for the 2024 Olympic Games.

The preparation of the athletes was meticulous, with continuous monitoring during national and regional competitions. Thiam recalled that the idea of participating in the Olympic Games is a major source of motivation for athletes. He hopes that this motivation, combined with their performances, will allow Senegal to return with several medals.

In 2022, Senegal managed to win three medals at the African Championships in Mauritius, including a gold medal for Sangoné Kandji, a silver medal for Saly Sarr and a bronze for Amadou Faye.
