The geese of discord. Installed in the Brionne leisure center (Eure), around twenty of these birds were killed by the authorities, reports L'Éveil normand. For what ? The animals would have become aggressive and their droppings would be a nuisance in terms of health. Ordered by the prefect, the felling caused tensions within the municipal council.
It was a wolf scout, a sworn officer who slaughtered these greylag geese and Canada geese on Monday, November 4, explains L'Éveil, who cites an order from the Departmental Directorate of Territories and the Sea (DDTM) which authorizes this slaughter by ” all modes and means.” An order taken in response to a request from the town hall. Since then, “there are still five or six left, but they are afraid and have taken refuge on a peninsula,” laments an elected opposition official to the regional media.
According to the mayor, Valéry Beuriot, the geese have become aggressive. The elected official said he had collected “two dozen complaints”. “The geese consider themselves at home, there are more and more of them. There is a pack effect, and not only during breeding periods,” he told the local daily.
The mayor also mentions the excrement of animals which causes an unsanitary problem, particularly concerning bathing water. “In view of the risks caused by these nuisances, particularly health problems, a lieutenant from the louveterie was commissioned and 19 gray geese were killed during this mission,” the prefecture confirmed to the newspaper.
“It’s a massacre and it’s despicable,” denounces this opposition representative. “These geese were domesticated. Why not remove them gently and give them to individuals or farms that could have welcomed them? », she questions. “I think we could have captured them and moved them, in collaboration with the specialized services,” adds another elected official from the opposition.
