Port-Cartier residences north of Route 138 evacuated

All residences north of Route 138 must be evacuated by 9 p.m.

In a publication on the Facebook account of the City of Port-Cartier, the authorities ordered the population to evacuate the areas of Brunel Park, Dominique Park as well as all residences located north of Route 138.

This decision was taken due to forest fires located approximately 15 kilometers north of Port-Cartier, it is explained.

The City of Port-Cartier advises residents that they can call 418 766-2348 for any information regarding the current evacuation.

According to the city’s general manager, approximately 1,000 people are affected by this evacuation notice.

They are invited to go to Baie-Comeau, where a temporary accommodation center has been established. It is located at the Henry-Leonard center, at 70, Michel-Émond.

For people who do not have access to a vehicle, transportation is offered from the Abri educational center in Port-Cartier.

State of emergency declared

Port-Cartier also announced that a state of emergency has been declared for a period of five days.

The Red Cross, the CISSS de la Côte-Nord and the Sûreté du Québec collaborate with the administration to ensure the safety of citizens.

Other announcements from the City are expected in the coming hours and days.
