“I hope that this deliberation will please the Dracenois traders.” Christine Nicoletti, deputy delegate for entertainment and commerce, submitted to a vote the elimination of the three Draguignan fairs during the municipal council meeting on Wednesday June 19, 2024.

Goodbye to the Saint-Hermentaire, Garlic and Sainte-Luce fairs. These took place each year, in order, on Saturday – 15 days before Pentecost –, the 1st Saturday in September and the 1st Saturday in December.

After contacting the three unions representing so-called traders “non-sedentary”the City specifies having received a single return from the union of traders and artisans of the markets of Provence (Scamp), which gave “his agreement as to [cette] suppression”.

Lack of attractiveness and diversity

Why remove these large markets, which spread out over the Allée d’Azemar parking lot and Boulevard Clemenceau?

The deliberation is intended to be clear: “In recent years, a disuse of said fairs by non-sedentary traders has been noted, with the consequence of a loss of diversity in the products offered and a lack of attractiveness and therefore of attendance for these events by the public.”

This impoverishment of the diversity of the offer has been quantified at the level of “90% of exhibitors at fairs [qui] are also on the “Jaurès” market ».

Seven opposition members abstained, and another voted against.
