The response from the Criminal Court came this Friday in the very special case involving four members of the wealthy Hinduja family, all accused of having practiced a form of domestic slavery on their property in Cologny. They are found guilty of usury by trade for having exploited the weakness of their employees in order to pay them a salary approximately 90% lower than that expected in the sector. Human trafficking, the most serious offense which was at the heart of this case, is however dismissed on the grounds that the staff had validly consented to these deplorable conditions.

Gross negligence, selfish motives, very low awareness and no empathy for the injured. The considerations are severe and the late compensation of the complainants will only have a “limited impact on the determination of the sentence”. The main defendants, Prakash and Kamal Hinduja, tried in absentia, are both sentenced to 4 and a half years in prison. Their son Ajay and his wife each received 4 years. The latest twist in this case is that they did not show up to hear the judges’ decision even though they had attended the debates. A compensatory claim of 850,000 francs is also issued. As for their confidant, he was sentenced to 18 months in prison for complicity.
