Be careful if you have planned a weekend on the coast. The Channel and North Sea maritime prefecture calls for vigilance during high tides from this Friday, November 15 and until Sunday, November 17 in the and Pas-de-. Strong coefficients are expected, notably Saturday 16 with a peak at 102 (the largest is 120).

High tides expected this weekend on the coast: the right reflexes

“High tides have the effect of increasing the tidal range (difference between the height of high water and that of low water) with a greater mixing of sea water and a more rapid rise in water levels,” explains the prefecture. in a press release. Therefore, sea currents become stronger and the sea more dangerous“creating an increased risk of isolation by the tide”.

To avoid taking any risks, some good reflexes should be adopted. The prefecture recommends:

  • of check the weather and tide times before any trip to the sea or on the coast;
  • not to go out alone and to inform loved ones of your intentions beforehand (place, time of departure and, if possible, return);
  • to have a means of communication to alert emergency services at sea (mobile phone charged and placed in a waterproof pocket for reach 196, or via channel 16 on VHF) ;
  • to stay close to a withdrawal point and maintain a visual reference point on the coast.

In 2023, 344 people found themselves isolated by the tide.
