November 25 in history

This celebration of the international day has its origins in the assassination on November 25, 1960, in the Dominican Republic, of the Mirabal sisters on the orders of the dictator and head of state, Rafael Trujillo, after they had suffered violence, within from their family or outside the family circle (rape, beatings and sexual harassment), and violence committed by the State (torture, rape of women incarcerated for political reasons).

In resolution 54/134 of December 17, 1999, the General Assembly of the United Nations (UN) proclaimed November 25 as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.
