Saint-Louis Church | La Roche-sur-Yon – Town and Agglomeration

La Roche-sur-Yon, resolutely turned towards the future, nevertheless keeps an eye on its past and wishes to preserve its historical heritage, strongly highlighted by the Saint-Louis church.

The context

Classified as a historic monument since 1982, this major building in the neoclassical style, based on a basilica plan, houses a significant number of decorations and objects, illustrating the evolution of cultural practices and the arts since the 19th century.

Attacked by time and humidity, the municipality decided to intervene to save the church, and a major restoration project began in October 2017 under the project management of the City of La Roche-sur-Yon.

The objectives of the project

  • The repair of the sacristy and the roof of the building: openings, rainwater downspouts and roof frames,
  • The installation of new heating, more economical and respectful of the building and the works,
  • The rehabilitation of the bell towers (floors, porticos and bells) and the restoration of the stairs,
  • The installation of a new fire safety system,
  • The restoration of the choir, the two side chapels, the facade, and the interior.

The word of the chosen one

The studies and diagnostics commissioned in 2016 by the municipality revealed the seriousness and urgency of the intervention to be undertaken on the Saint-Louis Church, to on the one hand, preserve the building, and on the other hand, highlight this jewel of Yonnais heritage
