Few teams can count on the experience of an athlete who has participated in the Olympic Games five times, but at Paris 2024, the Canadian table tennis team will be able to boast about it, thanks to veteran Mo Zhang.

Aged 35, Zhang has represented Canada at every Summer Olympic Games since Beijing 2008. In her first Games, Zhang finished 49e after being eliminated in the first round of the women’s singles tournament. At the Tokyo 2020 Games, she rose to the top 10, finishing ninth in the women’s singles event, as well as the mixed doubles event. Zhang’s performance in the women’s singles tournament matched Canada’s best Olympic result in the event.

Zhang is an eight-time Pan American Games medalist, including twice in her fifth and most recent appearance at Santiago 2023, where she won two bronze medals, one in women’s singles and another in mixed doubles with Eugene Wang.

“I am very happy to be able to participate in my fifth Olympic Games. It is an honor to participate in the Olympic Games with other great Canadian athletes, said Zhang. I am excited about the Opening Ceremony on the Seine and also the public presence at these Games. I hope we play well and without any regrets in every match, that we can play at our highest level. »

Wang is not far behind Zhang in terms of Olympic appearances. The 38-year-old athlete will be in his fourth Olympic Games this summer. He first competed at the London 2012 Games, just weeks after obtaining his Canadian citizenship. In addition to his mixed doubles bronze medal with Zhang in Santiago, Wang also won bronze in the men’s singles and silver in the men’s team event.

The Paris 2024 Games will be the first Olympic Games since London 2012 where Canada will field a men’s team.

Edward Ly, 21, who will make his Olympic debut in Paris, was part of the team that won silver in Santiago. He was also in the men’s singles tournament, just like Wang.

Jeremy Hazin will complete Team Canada by participating in his second Olympic Games. Hazin became the youngest Canadian national men’s singles champion in history when he won the title in 2017 at the age of 17. He also made history at age 13, when he became the youngest Canadian player to compete at the ITTF Senior World Championships.

The table tennis events will be played from July 27 to August 10 at the Arena Paris Sud 4.
