The mobilization of farmers from the FDSEA and JA will resume this Monday in Montpellier. The two unions will meet at 11 a.m. in front of the Montpellier prefecture, before going to the Place de la Comédie to distribute leaflets and then to the Esplanade de l'Europe.
Farmers want to be heard as the G20 opens in Brazil, in Rio de Janeiro. The point of tension is the free trade agreement between Europe and five countries in the south of the American continent, Mercosur, which France rejects but which is supported by other European countries. “The situation is alarming, writes the FDSEA in a press release*, economic pressure and falling income are pushing many operators to the brink of bankruptcy, endangering the future of our countryside and national food security.”*
The rural coordination, for its part, plans to join a toll barrier at the Spanish border on Tuesday, to block freight trucks coming from Spain. The union has been taking action for several weeks now, with banners deployed, radars covered and a wine merchant blocked in Maureilhan.
