The town of Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni, particularly impacted, has put in place measures to protect its residents.
Tap water unfit for consumption: distribution points set up
In Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni, located to the west of the Guyanathe water quality is seriously altered by the intrusion of salt water into the Maroni River, a consequence of drought. The Regional Health Agency (ARS) recommends no longer consuming tap water for drinking or cooking from November 13 to 19. The city and the Société Guyanaise des Eaux (SGDE) have thus established drinking water distribution points. These points, accessible from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., are located in several districts, such as the bus station, the Tarcy high school and the Charbonnière district. Residents can thus access drinking water without danger to their health.
Rush for bottled water
The crisis has led to a rush on bottled water, and the shelves of supermarkets have been emptied. Worried, residents have accumulated reserves. Stéphane, manager of a supermarket in Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni, describes a sudden increase in demand for water: the most affordable brands are now unavailable, forcing customers to buy more expensive products. Residents like Katia and Vladie fear that supply difficulties will continue.
Impact on schools and precautions in other municipalities
The water crisis also affects the schools of Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni. The STEG-UTG education union has called for the temporary closure of schools and denounces inadequate conditions for students and staff. According to the union, the water ration of 1.5 liters for three students is insufficient. He encourages parents to keep their children at home until the situation improves.
In addition, the ARS advises people with advanced kidney failure who reside in certain areas of Matoury and Montsinéry-Tonnégrande to avoid tap water. In collaboration with dialysis centers, the Communauté d'Agglomération du Center Littoral (CACL) provides bottled water to these patients to guarantee their health safety.
