Violent storms: 14 departments on alert Wednesday and Thursday: News

Météo-France has placed 14 departments under surveillance for violent thunderstorms for the evening of Wednesday and early morning of Thursday. A situation subject to change.

The stormy disturbance, which hit the west of France on the evening of Tuesday June 18, continues to move on Wednesday and Thursday. Heavy storms were expected to hit the center of the country late in the afternoon and early evening. Potentially violent episodes which forced Météo-France to place twelve departments on orange vigilance. Allier, Cher, Côte-d’Or, Corrèze, Creuse, Indre, Haute-Vienne, Puy-de-Dôme, Nièvre, Yonne, Loire and Saône-et -Loire are concerned. In its last bulletin at 10 p.m. this Wednesday, the meteorological institute decided to place two other departments on orange vigilance. These are Vienne and Indre-et-Loire. The new alert began in the middle of the evening and is due to end on Thursday June 20 at 6 a.m.

Météo-France had clarified earlier in the day that “the most violent thunderstorms and the strongest associated rainfall accumulations are expected” from 6 p.m. Wednesday. Note that in the departments placed on orange alert, rainfall accumulations of around 30 to 50 mm “in less than 3 hours and 50 to 80 mm over the episode” are expected locally.

Météo-France indicated that the stormy showers could also be followed by episodes of hail and strong wind gusts of up to 80 km/h. Note, also, that “storm activity declines from the middle of the night” but that one “Rainy activity can still continue in the areas concerned until Thursday morning”.

Temperatures falling at the end of the week

The weather will subsequently remain generally gloomy across the entire territory. Temperatures will drop again at the end of the week and fall below seasonal norms, particularly in the South. Summer is definitely not coming yet.
