the essential
Despite the difficulty of the performance, Léon Marchand won the 200m butterfly then the 200m breaststroke this Wednesday evening during the French swimming championships in Chartres. The two races, separated by less than an hour, allowed the Toulouse swimmer to obtain two new tickets for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

What assessment do you draw from this day with four 200m races?

It was cool (smile), I liked. I had a lot of fun today, this morning I managed the two races really well, I did what I needed to do to get into the final. And this evening, we had to look for him in the 200m breaststroke but it was cool.

What was the hardest part of your day?

The last 50m of the 200 breaststroke (smile). I knew we weren’t on time, I felt like I was short of the split time I wanted to do so I knew we really had to push for the last 50.

What was your objective during the finals, to go below the qualifying times or to achieve big times?

I wanted to do the times and 1’55” in the 200m butterfly I still had to send it. I’m swimming really well, I’m 1’54”08, it’s one of my best times so it’s cool. Then the 200 breaststroke I had to swim with what I had left, I had no more legs and no more arms. But I’m happy, it went well.

In what physical state are you approaching the breaststroke final?

I felt like I was anesthetized, a little asleep in the call room and it was really hard to get back into it. In the end I only had 45 minutes so it was a bit tight but it did it. There is muscular and mental fatigue too (laughter).

Do we feel a sense of gluttony in you doing these races?

Yes, that’s the kind of thing I love about swimming. I’ve always done a bit of racing, doing intense competitions because I love it. And I recover quite quickly so I take advantage of it.

Does that confirm your desire to do it at the Games?

Yes totally but we will have to swim faster. But for today it was perfect.

What lessons do you learn from this?

I think I didn’t eat enough before the 200 breaststroke. I should have taken a small bar between the two, because I had a little shut down in the call room but I recovered well so it’s okay. But I admit that 5 minutes before the last race it wasn’t easy.

Why do you like this kind of challenge?

I think it’s something that not many people do. 200 butterfly and 200 breaststroke is still a pretty weird duo but I love everything weird (laughter) and it’s cool to be able to change strokes like that. And taking on this kind of challenge gives you a lot of confidence for the future.
