We talked about rail this Wednesday evening at the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region hotel in Limoges. A line committee was organized in the presence of railway workers, user associations, managers of SNCF Voyageurs and SNCF Réseau, and chaired by Jacky Emon, regional advisor in charge of the TER issue. Three lines were addressed: Limoges-Angoulême, Poitiers-Limoges et Limoges-Ussel.

Limoges-Angoulême: “political victory” for the Region and hope of reopening

After the completion of work over ten kilometers of railway track last year for an amount of almost 10 million euros – 53% matched by the Region – the Limoges-Saillat-sur-Vienne axis (commune located on the border with Charente) was protected . The entire line between Limoges and Angoulême is closed for more than six years.

The challenge for regional elected officials was to include the line in the State-Region plan which runs until 2027. This has been done for a few days. “A political victory“, according to Jacky Emon, who assures that without the commitment of the Region the ligne would have been abandoned.

34 million euros are being put on the table by 2027, by the State and the Region to carry out studies and undertake initial work. A first step because the rehabilitation of the line requires “more than 200 million euros“. A step forward welcomed by Bernard Peuch, the president of the Angoulim user collective, but it does not represent “than 14%” path, that is to say the amount of work. The association will remain mobilized in the coming months to request a monitoring committee and funding prospects.

Major works on the Limoges-Poitiers line

Major works are necessary between Limoges and Poitiers. These will begin on December 2 on the northern part, between Poitiers and Le Dorat, north of Bellac. Planned work until September 2025with a “matching game“in the middle of the line,”we will get off the train and we will take the bus, and the same in the other direction“, indicates the regional advisor. The southern part, between Le Dorat and Limoges will also be redone by 2028.

Signaling work between Limoges and Ussel

The signaling, almost unique in France, of the Limoges-Ussel line will operate until 2028. Also within the framework of the State-Region plan, part of the envelope necessary for the work is released. Around 20 million euros including 4.5 for pre-project studies and more than 14 for works planned for late 2026 or early 2027. Work which will not, a priori, cause any change for travelers.

Mixed attendance

In New Aquitaine, TER attendance increased by 23% between 2019 and 2023 and 5.5% just between 2022 and 2023. A dynamic that we find on the Limoges-Poitiers line, with an increase of 6.2% in attendance between 2022 and 2023, i.e. average of 606 users each day, that is to say 32 per train.

On the other hand, attendance is falling between Limoges and Angoulême – 132 users per day – and Limoges and Ussel – 381 users per day. The Region invokes “temporary closures for work” to justify this.

Reinforced circulation

  • Limoges-Angoulême: one more round trip at the weekend allowing an earlier arrival in Limoges at 8:30 a.m. and a later departure at 8:10 p.m.
  • Limoges-Poitiers: two more daily round trips between Poitiers and Montmorillon during the week, and four on Friday
  • Limoges-Ussel: two additional round trips between Eymoutiers and Limoges in the morning on weekdays and two also at the end of the afternoon on weekends, always between Eymoutiers and Limoges.
