This weekend, the presidents of urban communities of the islands of Oléron, Ré and Noirmoutier met to discuss the establishment of a toll on the Oléron and Noirmoutier bridges.
Supported by the Ile de Ré, where the bridge is already paying, the presidents of the other two islands wish to set up “eco-participation” and in particular wish to have tourists contribute financially, revealed Ouest-.

They wish to take as an example what has already been in place on the Ile de Ré since 1999 with a paid toll.

The revenues collected by this potential “eco-participation” would be used to fight for the protection of the environment, the renovation of bridges, the improvement of mobility or even the fight against marine erosion.

The decision must be taken by the Department

If the urban area is in favor of setting up a toll, it must obtain the agreement of the Department of Charente-Maritime which is the owner of the Oléron bridge.

According to Michel Parent, maintenance of the Oléron viaduct would cost nearly 60 million euros to the Department. The cost of maintenance would be increasingly important according to the elected official in favor of the toll.
