The French Navy announced Tuesday that it had seized nearly 1.2 tons of cocaine from a Venezuelan sailboat about 100 kilometers south of Martinique.

The operation was carried out on June 8 “at the end of the night”, by the Dumont d’Urville, a vessel on maritime surveillance patrol, “diverted towards a sailboat suspected of illicit trafficking”, declare the Armed Forces in the Antilles (FAA ) in a press release.

Thanks to the support of a plane from the Regional Security System, based in Barbados, which “relocated the sailboat”, the intervention teams, when boarding the ship, “noted the presence of numerous bundles, tested positive for cocaine,” adds this same source.

“Forty bales were seized with a total weight of 1,165 kg,” specifies the French Navy.

Drugs destroyed in Venezuela

“The crew members and their cargo were handed over to the Venezuelan authorities at sea,” add the FAA, and “the drugs will be destroyed in Venezuela, in the presence of a representative of the French authorities.”

Since the start of the year, more than 15 tonnes of narcotics have already been seized by the FAA, specifies the French Navy, compared to more than 11 tonnes for the whole of 2023.
