In 2027, there will be a mathematics test for the baccalaureate from the first, like in French.

SCHOOL – Gabriel Attal launched the first blade when he was Minister of Education. He then created, for example, the level groups in middle school. A year later, his successor Anne Genetet revealed, this Tuesday, November 12, the continuation of this “clash of knowledge”.

And it does not return to the flagship measure put in place by the former Prime Minister in the sixth and fifth years but it limits the generalization for the future. Fourth and third grade students will be mixed for one hour per week, for French or mathematics groups alternating each week.

Anne Genetet also relaunches an announcement made by her predecessor: forcing middle school students to obtain the certificate to move on to second grade. This will be the case in June 2027, otherwise students will have to repeat their third year, go to CAP-BEP or to a bridging class for a sort of refresher course before following the traditional process. In June 2024, 14% of candidates had not obtained their certificate.

Maths at the baccalaureate in 1st grade, fractions in CE1

The Minister of Education also announces a change for baccalaureate candidates, already planned by Gabriel Attal: they will have to take an anticipated mathematics test in first grade as is already the case for French. Those who take the maths option will take a second test in final year.

Still in mathematics, but much earlier in school, Anne Genetet wants to change the programs. This will be the case from the start of the 2025 school year for CP to sixth grade. “I’ll give you an example,” the minister explains to AFP. Until now, the notion of fraction was only introduced in CM1. It's much too late. A child, even in CE1, knows what half a baguette corresponds to. We will therefore advance the learning of fractions and decimal numbers from CE1 to reinforce automatisms in mathematics. »

These changes in the programs will also concern French and then in 2026, this will be the case for French, maths and modern languages in middle school. Finally, the minister announced state funding for the purchase of school textbooks in priority education networks and in small rural communities.
