Gard: fire prevention before the summer season

As summer approaches, forest fire prevention and control services are mobilizing and preparing for the summer season to best intervene against fires in the department.

Despite a rainy spring, the risk of fire remains present, as evidenced by the fire which broke out in the Var in recent days.
Rising temperatures and wind, which generally mark the summer months, are propagation factors that should not be neglected: an uncontrolled fire outbreak can quickly burn several hectares.

Between June 15 and September 15, a certain number of rules must be respected to avoid forest and vegetation fires:
• All fires (cigarettes, barbecues, firecrackers, lanterns, etc.) are prohibited in wooded areas, moors and scrublands and within a radius of 200 meters around these sectors (prefectural decree relating to employment Risk management- forest fire/ban on the use of fire).
• Work producing heat and sparks, whether carried out by agricultural, forestry, construction, crafts or by individuals, is regulated (and sometimes prohibited) depending on the level of the safety card. fire risk published daily on the prefecture website wooded areas, moors and scrublands and within a radius of 200 m around.

In the event of a very severe or extreme risk, access to certain massifs may be prohibited.
Responsibility for an outbreak of fire, voluntary or involuntary, is systematically sought and can be incurred in the event of a fire. The penalties incurred can be up to 3 years in prison and a fine of €45,000 in the event of an unintentional fire likely to expose people to bodily harm or create irreversible damage to the environment.

More than 9 out of 10 wildfires are human caused. If, in recent years, the areas burned in the Gard remain moderate, the number of fire outbreaks is constantly increasing and therefore requires everyone to be vigilant to avoid endangering people and property.
