It was a day of celebration in Les Sables-d'Olonne, with the departure of 40 skippers for a solo round-the-world trip. Hundreds of thousands of people were there for the occasion.
They will travel 45,000 km across the oceans, an exceptional adventure for 40 sailors. A few moments before the start, the fervor was palpable among the spectators on the quays of Sables-d'Olonne. They came to enjoy the start of the race. Everyone got up early to encourage the sailors, a true communion between spectators and sailors. Amid the cheers, skipper Thomas Ruyant struggles to contain his emotion.
The supporters are enthusiastic, some even took out the smoke bombs. To not miss anything of the show, you had to be well equipped or well accompanied: “It’s the first time there have been as many people as this. It’s an event to see. It’s really good!”rejoices a spectator. The 2020 edition without an audience due to the pandemic seems to be far away. This year, the Vendée Globe broke all attendance records.
