L’Tourism Observatory is dedicated to in-depth analysis of the tourism sector, focusing on significant developments and the strategic orientations of Rennes Métropole in this area. To do this, it gathers key data – attendance, overnight stays, accommodation offer, visits to the Tourist Office – and also examines the impact of employment, as well as professional events and congresses which punctuate life local. Its latest report, recently published online, offers detailed insight into the past year of 2023.
To put it briefly, if the first months of 2023 remained generally stable, the second half saw a slight decline in tourist attraction for the Metropolis. The end of the year, particularly the months of October and November, proved to be more discreet, with a drop in attendance estimated between 7 and 8% compared to last year. Ultimately, this variation resulted in a drop in tourist influx of around 2% over the whole year, compared to 2022.
However, a trend may be of concern.
Indeed, the share of inhabitants of the Ille-et-Vilaine department – although still in the majority with 33% of all attendance, continues to decrease, showing a drop of 3 points compared to 2022, but especially 9 points since 2019. Conversely, the number of visitors from other French regions remains stable compared to the previous year. So what? Would Brazilians shun the metropolis?
