Beethoven’s ‘Ode to Joy’, which is also the EU anthem, was performed on Saturday afternoon at Jesuitenplatz in Lucerne by a choir of more than 70 Ukrainian refugees. Several hundred people attended the event and applauded warmly.

According to a press release, the Ukrainian singers, who left their country because of the Russian war of aggression, wanted to thank the Swiss company for its hospitality.

The concert was organized in the form of a flash mob, that is to say an apparently spontaneous gathering. The instrumentalists first arrived on the Place des Jésuites with violins, cellos and double basses, then the choristers joined them. Some of them wore traditional costumes.

Participants in a previously organized demonstration in support of Ukrainian prisoners of war flanked the choir. Many carried Ukrainian flags. After the ‘Ode to Joy’, the choir sang, with the support of the audience, a popular Ukrainian song as well as the national anthem.

The concert was organized by music agent Daniela Majer from Berlin and supported by the Ukrainian Culture Network. Choirs from Bern, Zurich and Lausanne traveled to Lucerne. The instrumentalists who accompanied the choir mostly came from the International Menuhin Music Academy, based in Gstaad BE.
