Residents of Quebec will be able to reconnect with their libraries starting June 27. Friday afternoon, after three and a half months of strike, the 240 municipal library employees accepted the employer’s offer in a proportion of 52%.

This was the fourth offer presented to employees by the Canadian Institute of Quebec. The third was rejected by 52% at the end of April.

At the end of the vote, many employees displayed an air of resignation, disappointed with the result of the negotiations after 106 days of strike.

Among other things, they obtain salary increases of 16% over four years, until 2026. A bonus of at least $500 will also be paid to them upon signing the agreement depending on their seniority.

According to her, the Canadian Institute of Quebec, the organization that manages municipal libraries, has scratched everywhere he was able to get money. She invites the City of Quebec to rethink the budget municipal libraries over the coming years.

Some employees also believe that this is a fight to improve their working conditions which will be continued during the next negotiations.

Consequences of the strike

The three-month strike led to a drastic drop in traffic in Quebec libraries, which recorded 85% fewer loans than the previous year during the same period.

Since March 1, the day the strike began, only three libraries remained open in Quebec with restricted hours.

The strike also forced the cancellation of activities planned for the inauguration of the Gabrielle-Roy library, renovated at a cost of $43 million.
