Calvados: individuals offer a second life to 600 chickens saved from the slaughterhouse

50 millions of laying hens are slaughtered each year in , according to the Chickens for All association. Two sales operations are organized to reduce this number. This Friday, the meeting was set in the parking lot of a supermarket in Moult. Interested individuals had to register to come and collect their chickens. Classic redheads are sold at seven euros.

“They still lay as many eggs”

The rescued chickens are old a year and a halfbut they are already considered too old. “For me, they still lay just as much. Afterwards, the breeders perhaps feel that it is not enough for their turnover.” reacts Doriane, the seller of Poules pour tous. Interested individuals are of the same opinion. Many of them come to collect a few chickens.

Bruno and Clarisse, regulars, have already six chickens. They have them all purchased thanks to this system, and return regularly, to replace those who die. “WeIt makes us happy, we have grandchildren, they are happy to go and collect the eggs. We allow chickens to live longer.” he explains.

In total, 600 chickens are saved thanks to these two days of sales. “We know that they will end their lives in a garden, in private homes, so that's always more pleasing than seeing them roasted.” smiled Doriane.

A good action, at a lower price

For us it’s beneficial because it’s much cheaper, and it also saves them.” explains Yannick. He is the owner of 14 chickens, and comes to buy some new ones every year. “On the other hand, it takes some time for them to get back into good condition, because they are all featherless.” Marks of their lives in breedingbut no problem with Yannick. “There are five hectares of land, so it’s truly outdoorsy. If they could choose between battery farming and us, I think they would come to us.” smiles Yannick.

In total, 100,000 laying hens are saved every year in the Great West, by Chickens for All. The next meeting is this Saturday morning, between 10 a.m. and 12 p.mat 24 rue du Long Douet in Bretteville-sur-Odon. The company returns to sell chickens once every two months in .
