Köniz (BE): Mother sentenced to life in prison for infanticide

“We hope that this child lost consciousness quickly and that she did not suffer before dying,” declared Thursday the president of a Berne court, which sentences a mother to life in prison for the murder of her 8 year old daughter. The Court concluded that, on the evening of February 1, 2022, the accused had taken her offspring into a forest in Köniz (BE) before inflicting fatal injuries on her head with an eight-kilo stone. The judges therefore believed the 12-year-old boy who, having seen them both walking in the woods, had been able to describe the defendant.

The court considered that the latter, now aged 32, loved her daughter, but that her life as a single mother was exhausting and that she was not up to the task. It was concluded that she had acted deviously in luring her daughter into the hiding place and that her motives for doing so were “selfish”. The strange behavior of the mother at the time of the discovery of the body was also raised: that evening, she waited 15 meters from her child, inert, for the police to arrive on the scene, and gave the impression of fear let him be harmed.

For her part, the accused has always proclaimed her innocence. “I could never have touched my daughter. I loved him,” she defended herself during her trial. His lawyer had called for acquittal, while pointing out the inconsistencies and inaccuracies of the young witness. The woman who was found guilty of murdering her daughter can still appeal the judgment. But if this is not the case, she will be able to request parole at the earliest after fifteen years in prison.
