A diplomatic incident took place on Thursday, November 7 in Jerusalem during the visit of the French Minister of Foreign Affairs. According to Jean-Noël Barrot, the Israeli police entered a site belonging to France without authorization. The Israeli ambassador was summoned by France.
On the video, we can see a French gendarme being unceremoniously arrested by Israeli police officers. The scene takes place in the Éléona estate which houses the Pater Noster church, property of the French Republic. Following a dispute over the security of the site, two French gendarmes were briefly arrested before being released. But for the French Minister of Foreign Affairs, currently visiting Jerusalem, the mere presence of these Israeli police officers inside the area constitutes a diplomatic incident.
Éléona is one of the four possessions of the French domain of Jerusalem. Places which therefore belong to France and which are managed by the Consulate General of France in Jerusalem. According to Israeli authorities, the presence of Israeli police officers met usual security protocols.
