After a one-year break in Nottingham, Remo Freuler returned to Italy to regain his rank: that of one of the best halfbacks in Calcio.

As at Atalanta, the 32-year-old from Zurich quickly established himself as the regulator of the Bologna game. Under the guidance of Thiago Motta, he had a magnificent season ending in fifth place in the standings, synonymous with qualification for the final phase of the Champions League. ‘The club has been waiting for decades to experience such a season. The fans’ party lived up to their expectations, smiles Remo Freuler.

The Zurich resident did not enjoy this magnificent countryside for very long. He had to switch to Euro mode with the hope of repeating the 2021 journey which took Switzerland to the quarter-final stage. ‘I don’t know if the 2021 team was stronger than today. I want to believe that no, he blurted out. I feel like we haven’t reached our zenith yet. We found great chemistry within this team. The St. Gall camp, in any case, went perfectly.’

Like good wine

On Saturday against Hungary, he will be partnered in the midfield by his captain Granit Xhaka – ‘Granit is like good wine; he gets better with age’, he said -, to order the play of the Swiss team. ‘First of all, you have to make sure you don’t concede a goal,’ he says, to confirm the impression this Swiss team is giving off this year with its three-man defense. It won’t be easy to score him a goal… His eight seasons in Calcio have taught him that it’s defense that wins titles.

‘This Swiss team has no reason to hide,’ he continues. She can nourish real ambitions. I know that several observers say that we will be the surprise team of this Euro. We’ll see. First of all, you have to get out of the group stage. With Hungary, Scotland and Germany, we are in a very balanced group. There are no favorites. The shape of the day will decide.’
