After several months of work, the new Sports Hall of Nimes (Gard) was inaugurated Tuesday, November 5, in the presence of Jean-Paul Fournier, the mayor of the city. The new building is a new sports facility, extended over 8700m².
A “temple dedicated to sport”
Announced long ago by the municipal team, the project for a large Sports Hall in Nîmes has now come to fruition. The site was recently opened to the public and is named after the gymnastics champion, Ludivine Furnonborn in Nîmes.
Wanted as a true “temple dedicated to sport” by the mayor, Jean-Paul Fournier, the new equipment is spread over more than 8700m². It welcomes a twenty sports associations. Most of them have left the aging Costières stadium.
Designed by the A+ Architecture agency, the building is made up of several floors. A sports hall has been set up, on the ground floor including a large climbing wall as well as two rooms dedicated to artistic gymnastics on 1400m² for one and rhythmic and sports gymnastics (GRS) on 730 m²for the other.
25 million euros
Nîmes sports enthusiasts will also be able to benefit from a huge sports hall, present on both floors. This space will accommodate fans of badmintonof basket-ballof futsalof handball a you volley-ball. In the end, the Gardois will be able to practice there 11 different sporting disciplines.
The entire new sports site is covered in a huge ribbon canvasimagined by the artist Alain Clément. Composed of 140 panels juxtaposed to each other, it is blue in color. It constitutes a homage to the Roman toga and above all to the textile past of the Gard prefecture.
The project was completed in less than two years. Its cost amounts to 25 million eurosentirely supported by the city of Nîmes (Gard).
Located near Parnasse, the home of the Nîmes handball club, and the Antonins stadium where the Nîmes Olympique football team plays, the new sports site is now open to the public, free access.
Who is Ludivine Furnon?
Born in October 1980 in Nîmes (Gard), Ludivine Furnon is a French gymnast. She is one of the most gifted gymnasts of her generation. She participated in numerous international competitions in the 1990s and 2000s. She obtained the first French medal during the world championships in Sabae (Japan) by placing third on floor. In the spring of 2000, she became European champion, on floor, during a competition organized in Paris. She was then “only” 20 years old. After working in the “Cirque du Soleil” troupe for 6 years, she returned to live in Nîmes.
