Since the attack on an 86-year-old resident by a vulture in Verrières, in Aveyron, anger is still present. Despite the exchange of arms between the League for the Protection of Grand Causses Birds (LPO) and young farmers, a draft decree was published in October to authorize scaring shots, revealed Actu.fr.
The scare shot is a measure of removal, a device used to satisfy breeders in order to limit the consumption of animals, calves in particular, by the griffon vulture. A total of 102 municipalities are affected by this authorization; the decision to intervene must first be validated by the prefect.
The Protection League in the fight against these scare shots
The LPO is outraged and intends to have this removal measure banned again. According to the league, “a minority of cattle breeders” blame the vulture and almost all of the animals attacked are sick or in distress.
The LPO regrets a decision which will not resolve the problem. In the meantime, it will soon be possible for breeders to use this method, but only people trained and led by the services of the French Biodiversity Office (OFB) will be authorized to carry out these shots.
