Investigations are continuing to explain the cause of the discomfort of around thirty people in a school in Fère-Champenoise, in Marne.

Investigations are continuing to understand the cause of the discomfort which affected around thirty students and adults at a school in Fère-Champenoise, in Marne, the prefecture said on Friday, excluding in particular carbon monoxide poisoning. Since Thursday May 30, “around thirty students and adults presented episodes of headaches, nausea and itching”she recalls in a press release, emphasizing that since June 4, no more children have been treated in hospital and no new reports have been made.

The investigations carried out by the health authorities have made it possible at this stage to rule out the hypotheses of food poisoning, contamination by the water fountain and carbon monoxide poisoning, writes the prefecture. The firefighters also did not detect the presence of chemicals, while the Regional Environment Directorate (Dreal) did not note any suspicious human or agricultural activity. The Atmo network, which monitors air quality, does not report any allergenic plant essences.

Research continues in particular through the installation of measuring devices by Atmo and a survey of the families and adults concerned, in order to establish a “epidemiological synthesis”. The reopening of the school “will be decided after receipt of the results of the ongoing investigations”, underlines the prefecture. In the meantime, elementary school students will be welcomed in a college and at the association center, while those in kindergarten “will benefit from educational continuity” from a distance.
