On November 23, 2023, the Île-de-France Region gave its agreement to the Regional Prefect, Mr. Marc Guillaume, with a view to the requisition and transformation into emergency accommodation centers of five high schools closed permanently in June of the same year. Of these five high schools, three were actually transformed into CHU : Valadon high school in the 18thethe Charles de Gaulle high school in the 20e and the Théophile Gautier high school in 12e.
Two high schools concerned located in the 19e district, the Brassens high school on rue Manin and the Armand Carrel high school on rue Armand Carrel remain unoccupied and empty of any activity to this day.
At the same time, the “Morts à la rue” collective has identified 735 homeless people who died in 2023, a sad record since this type of census has existed. The youngest of these people who died in the street was only 16 years old. ! Every evening, in Paris, according to the Unicef barometer, there are 558 families and dozens of unaccompanied minors who sleep outside, risking their health, their physical integrity and their safety. .
It is therefore urgent that the premises of the former Georges Brassens and Armand Carrel high schools be transformed into accommodation centers, at least for this winter and more widely as long as the work for the future projects announced in these buildings is not initiated. .
In the 19e district, several students educated in our establishments sleep on the street. These premises, due to their capacity, could allow many homeless children who live in Paris to sleep in a shelter this winter and continue their education. presque » normal surrounded by their family.
No community can tolerate abandoning families and minors on the streets and everything must be done to protect children.
While in schools, supportive parents and staff work every day to ensure that these children and their families have dignified living conditions (night reception, distribution of meals and clothing, assistance with administrative procedures), we ask the town hall to Paris and the town hall of the 19e to study the possibilities of shelter in all possible places and therefore in the Brassens and Armand Carrel high schools. We know that we cannot count on the current government and its prefectural machinery which is responsible for the saturation of social housing systems and emergency accommodation systems and which has no demands towards the owners of empty housing, but we let us hope that the left-wing forces with political responsibilities will fight concretely alongside us and alongside all those who in these dark times are working for social progress. Concretely carrying out the project of a roof for all is moving in the direction of social progress.
Also, we will be present at 6 p.m. in front of the town hall on the 19the on this day of the municipal council, Tuesday November 5, to request the active support of the elected officials of the 19e to implement the commitment of Madame Valérie Pécresse and open unoccupied high schools so that they can welcome families as quickly as possible.
