From 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., eight gendarmes including six on motorcycles were mobilized for this road safety operation in the presence of Stéphanie Petitjean, chief of staff of the prefect of Manche. In addition to speeding, a motorist tested positive for drugs and possession of drugs. A motorcyclist was also arrested for lack of license.
“After 30 deaths on the roads of the Channel in 2023, we are already at 32 victims for this year, recalls Stéphanie Petitjean who notes a relaxation of behavior on the road such as refusal of priority, burned stops or dangerous overtaking.”
Vehicles immobilized for seven days
This Friday, a car and a motorcycle were placed in administrative detention for seven days with impoundment. “ No one can touch it and the owner will have to pay the costs in addition to the fine,” explains Captain David Raimond, second in command of the departmental road safety squadron (EDSR). “The driver leaves on foot and has time to think”, adds the chief of staff of the prefect.
This new procedure, launched a month ago, has already been used 27 times in October in the Channel. At the end of the seven days, the public prosecutor is questioned. “And depending on the history of the offender, continues Captain Raimond, the vehicle may be placed in judicial detention until the date of the judgment.”
