A collective challenge for a tobacco-free life – Le Petit Journal

Smoking remains a major public health problem in , and is no exception to this reality. With 28.5% of its inhabitants smoking daily, or around 1.2 million people, the region is one of the most affected by smoking. However, initiatives like No Tobacco Month offer a glimmer of hope and concrete support for those who want to quit smoking.
Smoking in Occitania and France: Where are we?

In Occitania: 28.5% of Occitans are daily smokers, or around 1.2 million people. Occitanie is one of the regions most affected by smoking in France (2021).
In France : 15 million smokers, including 12 million daily smokers. Gender disparities: 27.8% of men (18-75 years) versus 23% of women are daily smokers (2021). 32.3% of the precarious population are daily smokers (2021). On average, daily smokers aged 18-75 reported smoking 12.6 cigarettes (or equivalent) per day in 2022, stable compared to 2021 and 2019.
Tobacco remains the leading cause of preventable death : 7,325 deaths are attributable to smoking in Occitanie in 2015, or 12.8% of the total deaths occurring in the same year. 1 smoker in 26 dies prematurely from a tobacco-related illness, or 75,000 people per year (in 2015 ), representing 13% of deaths, including 61.7% from cancer. In 2023 in Occitanie, nearly 7.3 million euros will have been reimbursed for nicotine replacement treatments. In 2023, an average of 25,000 people per month in Occitania will benefit from nicotine replacement treatments. Between 2014 and 2019, 1.9 million smokers quit smoking. 59.3% of daily smokers say they want to quit smoking. Launched by the Ministry of Health and Prevention and Public Health France since 2016, in partnership with Health Insurance, #MoisSansTabac is a collective challenge encouraging smokers to quit smoking together for 30 days, in November.
A support program in 40 days

10 days to prepare for weaning: Preparation phase before weaning to obtain information and choose a cessation strategy.
30 days to stop: Reinforced support with a daily coaching program offering challenges, advice from tobacco specialists and tips for staying the course. Results of Operation #MoisSansTabac 2023: 157,576 registered in France, including 15,875 in Occitanie, or 10% of national registrations. 14 #MoisSansTabac villages will be deployed in 2024, with information stands, smoking cessation kits, free individual interviews with tobacco specialists, and global health workshops. Specific actions with companies and training for healthcare professionals.
