To turn on his light bulbs or recharge his electric vehicle, André can now count on local electricity produced a few kilometers from his home. Some of these wind turbines power his house, located in Joué-sur-Edre in -Atlantique. “It's fabulous that it's near my house. When the wind turbine turns, my heating is the wind. The wind turbine turns and I benefit from it”he rejoices.

A drop in the value of the property?

Three machines like this generate this electricity. A new concept launched by an energy supplier. The operator also undertakes to reduce the amount of customers' bills depending on the electricity produced. According to him, on a bill of 1000 euros, the customer can save 200 euros. “Beyond 100 kilowatts, minus 20% on each kilowatt hour that is consumed by customers. And if it runs very fast, if it goes up to its maximum of 3000 kilowatts, it’s minus 50%,” assures Lacelot D’Hautuille, director of Octopus Energy France.

In return, the company will cut into its margins. This offer concerns all municipalities located within a radius of around ten kilometers. On one concerned, the municipality says it is surprised by this initiative and remains cautious. “We're bringing the consumer closer to the producer. I think it's going in the right direction. But it has to be explained well and on the bill, it has to be concretely seen that there is a reduction in the electricity bill “estimates Jean-Pierre Belleil, mayor of Joué-sur-Edre.

Cheaper and local electricity. In the town, the idea arouses reactions. “It's good to know because I've always asked myself the question. We're installing hundreds of wind turbines. Who benefits? I don't know.” underlines a resident. “Everything is expensive now so any savings are good to take”, enthuses a passerby. But some fear the experience will hurt home values in the long run. “It would be better to seriously compensate local residents for the drop in the value of their property. While it was judged by the Court of Appeal very recently, I believe it was in March this year, a decrease between 20 and 40%”, argues Bernadette Kaars, vice-president of the Sustainable Environment Federation. In France, this concept could be of interest to other regions. According to a study, 7 out of 10 French people are in favor of the presence of wind turbines near their homes, provided that electricity costs them less.
