The budget for financing Social Security is on the table of deputies in the National Assembly. The Minister of Health has put forward the idea of a tax on processed sugars.
Sweets in varied flavors, a ready-made snack… What do they have in common? These are processed products with added sugar. Soon they could be taxed. In front of a supermarket in Poitiers (Vienna), a nurse is rather in favor of it. “Diabetes is a pathology that is growing enormously, especially among younger people. So if it can have an impact on this pathology, for me it makes sense”she explains.
Objective : push brands to offer healthier recipes. The manufacturers have made their calculations. If the tax is passed, on shelves, on average the increase will be 18 cents per product. For example, for a pack of croissants: + 25 cents. This price increase displeases some consumers. “Sometimes, sweet products are the pleasure products, so it’s a bit embarrassing”deplores a mother.
