Ardeche. Fifteen wolf attacks in 2024: new protected areas

Since the start of 2024, 15 reports of predation have been attributed to wolves in Ardèche. A final case is currently being assessed. “However, at this stage, no indication of long-term settlement of individuals has been identified in the department,” warns the Ardèche prefecture.

These attacks having been noted in new areas, the prefect of Ardèche signed the expansion of circle 2 to 13 new municipalities in the department. Thus, now two thirds of Ardèche municipalities are in circle 2.

“This allows breeders in these municipalities to have, in addition to aid for the purchase and maintenance of protection dogs, aid for the installation of fixed or mobile fences and the development of a protection strategy with the help of a specialist advisor on pastoralism and predation from the Chamber of Agriculture,” specifies the prefecture.

Before adding: “The work of supporting breeders, in close collaboration with the Chamber of Agriculture, has also made it possible to recognize non-protectable areas on five farms in Ardèche. Thus, in the event of repeated attacks on these areas, predated animals will be compensated, even if no protection measures are activated. »

Finally, the prefect of Ardèche issued 22 defense shooting authorizations to farms which requested it and which have put in place protective measures.
