The nonagenarian went late Tuesday afternoon to the grave of a loved one, in the cemetery located outside her village of Canaules-et-Argentières, about thirty kilometers northwest of Nîmes. , when she was fatally injured in the carotid artery by a dog, according to the first elements of the investigation.

It was an 18-year-old girl, an apprentice in a nearby dog ​​breeder, who raised the alarm, telling the police that the old lady had been attacked by a stray dog. It was in fact she who walked three dogs – an Argentinian mastiff, an Australian shepherd and a Staffordshire bull terrier (staffie) – in the cemetery grounds, one of which escaped from her when the old lady was present.

“An investigation into manslaughter is underway” and “two people”, the young woman and the manager of the dog center, were placed in police custody on Tuesday, initially indicated the Alès prosecutor, Abdelkrim Grini .

During her hearings, the apprentice explained that she had been put “under pressure” to declare that it was a stray dog ​​and “admitted that it was a ploy put in place by the manager to to evacuate its possible responsibility in these facts,” said the magistrate on Wednesday evening.

These two police custody periods were extended and two other people, the sons of the manager, were also placed in police custody. They are suspected of “altering a crime or misdemeanor scene” for having removed from the village the dog that bit the victim, explained Mr. Grini.
