“We want to be heard”: a major mobilization of pharmacists expected in Alsace this Thursday

Very few pharmacies will be open this Thursday, May 30 in Alsace. 95% of pharmacies close all day in Bas-Rhinthese are more than 8 out of 10 pharmacies which will close between 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. in Haut-Rhin. A major national movement which concerns in particular drug shortages and fed up with the profession who are demanding an increase in fees.

Drug shortage: a real headache for pharmacists

Pharmacists are asking in particular for increases in their fees and assistance. Discussions take place since November 2023 with Health Insurance (conventional negotiations), but the amount put on the table so far by the CNAM is considered insufficient. They are also protesting against the shortages of medicines which cause them daily problems.

There was nearly 5,000 references missing in 2023 compared to barely 400 in 2014. “Shortages stress our families here and it also takes us a lot of time to call doctors to exchange products to see what we can replace with: the impact for patients is clear and immediate,” explains Julien Deledicque, pharmacist in the western district of Colmar and member of the Haut-Rhin pharmacists’ union.

“We have to make waiting lists, like when there was Covid. We take people’s names and when the medicine arrives, we phone them to tell them that the product has arrived, it’s very time-consuming,” adds Pierre Hickel, co-president of the Haut-Rhin pharmacists’ union, based in Ensisheim.

Demonstrations in Strasbourg and Mulhouse

To mark this strike movement, two rallies are planned in Alsace. At 1 p.m., in front of the CPAM in Mulhouse, the pharmacists will parade through the streets of the city center, they will then be received at the CPAM at 2:30 p.m. In Strasbourg, gathering from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Place Broglie, before a meeting with the prefecture.
