The Prefect of Eure has just expressed, Wednesday May 29, 2024 through a press release, an unequivocal condemnation following two anti-Semitic incidents that recently occurred in the department.

On May 28, a 15-year-old schoolboy was violently attacked and insulted by two individuals shouting “dirty Jew”. The next day, May 29, four graves of people of the Jewish faith were desecrated and defaced at the Madeleine cemetery in Évreux.

These acts, described as “cowardly and infamous” by the Prefect, are a direct attack on the fundamental values of the French Republic. He reiterated that any aggression against compatriots of the Jewish faith constitutes a serious attack on the Republic itself and the principles of social cohesion and mutual respect.

Measures already taken

Judicial investigations were immediately opened for each incident, under the authority of the Public Prosecutor. At the same time, reinforced security measures have been put in place to prevent any recurrence and ensure the protection of citizens of the Jewish faith in the department.

The authorities’ rapid and firm response aims not only to provide justice to the victims, but also to reaffirm the Republic’s commitment against all forms of hatred and discrimination. The Prefect of Eure assured that all necessary resources will be mobilized to identify and prosecute those responsible for these heinous acts.
