At a time when the Service de police de la Ville de Montréal (SPVM) is worried about losing the contract that unites it with Aéroports de Montréal (ADM), the organization affirmed that the police force would continue to provide “services related to public security” in Montréal-Trudeau.

At the start of the week, the Brotherhood of Police Officers of Quebec turned to Mayor Valérie Plante, seeking her support for the renewal of the contract. Its president, Yves Francoeur, argued that airports were a privileged target “in terms of terrorism” and that it was “imperative to ensure optimal response time”.

According to him, the SPVM is the only police force capable of guaranteeing security at the airport, where some 22 million travelers pass through annually.

ADM, however, qualifies the content of Mr. Francoeur’s letter: the call for tenders – which will end on June 7 – concerns only the contract for the armed response to checkpoints. Throughout the airport site, it is the SPVM which will remain responsible for security. “ADM pays more than 40 million in municipal taxes to benefit from this service, which is indeed essential,” said the organization in an email to The Press.

And while Mr. Francoeur argued that the SPVM was “the only [service] able to effectively ensure security at the airport”, ADM instead argues that “other police forces offer this service in Canadian airports”.

With the contract linking ADM to the SPVM coming to an end, “both parties have expressed their desire not to renew the agreement within its current framework,” explained the organization, which notably operates the Montreal-Trudeau international airport. A call for tenders was therefore launched “in order to evaluate the proposals on the market”. “The contract will be awarded based on a very specific evaluation grid,” assures ADM.
