La Manche feels left out of the celebrations of the 80th anniversary of the Landing

Some ten days before the 80th anniversary of the Landing, anger is brewing in the Channel. At the initiative of the regional council, four daily shuttles are set up in Calvados to allow locals and tourists to visit the main sites linked to June 6, 1944 and in particular the D-Day beaches (the shuttles serve the main historic sites of Calvados at regular intervals every day between 9:30 a.m. and 7 p.m., until September 30, the price is 5 euros per day for those under 26 and 10 euros for others). All? Exactly no…

And that’s what makes Éric Mauger, a resident of Sainte-Mère-Église (Manche), passionate about history, jump: “It’s scandalous. These shuttles remain in Calvados and do not serve any site in the Channel. As if Utah Beach or Sainte-Mère-Église were not major places, even though it was here that the liberation of the port of Cherbourg and little by little of all of Europe took place. That visitors are deprived of these Mancho sites is not only a scandal but also a historical injustice. »

MP Stéphane Travert does not hide his anger either: “The initiative of these shuttles is a good idea. But the fact that they did not pass at all through the Channel, nor Utah Beach, nor Sainte-Marie-du-Mont, which are emblematic places of the Allied advance in June 1944, is an incomprehensible aberration. These shuttles still offer 17 stops, all in Calvados, and not a single one in Manche! »

“This is not only unfortunate for tourists and professionals in the sector, but especially for the inhabitants of our region. Many residents of Calvados have never visited these sites in La Manche because they did not have the opportunity or the means. And vice versa. It was a perfect opportunity to allow them. Obviously the Region has not grasped it. She still has a few days to rectify the situation…” he added, clearly irritated.
