New step for a merger in the Vallée de Joux –

The municipal councils of the three communes of the Vallée de Joux – L’Abbaye, Le Chenit and Le Lieu – spoke out on Tuesday evening in favor of a merger. The population will have the last word on September 22.

The merger agreement was widely accepted by the three legislative bodies, both by the elected representatives of L’Abbaye (26 yes/9 no/3 abstentions) and those of Chenit (50/8/0) and Lieu (28/7/ 0).

“This stage of the process was key: if only one of the councils refused the notice drawn up jointly by the three Municipalities, the idea of the merger stopped there,” indicates the steering committee of the merger project in a press release.

According to the merger agreement, L’Abbaye, Le Chenit and Le Lieu would form a single commune from January 1, 2027. It would be called La Vallée de Joux and would be the largest in the canton with an area of 16′ 361 hectares.

The new town would have around 7,000 inhabitants. It would bring together ten localities, most of which have already merged (L’Orient, Le Brassus, Le Sentier, Le Solliat, Le Lieu, Le Séchey, Les Charbonnières, Le Pont, L’Abbaye and Les Bioux).

Long process

In view of the vote on September 22, information sessions for the population will be organized in June in the three municipalities.

This idea of a three-way merger has been circulating in the Vallée de Joux for more than 10 years. A first project failed in 2011, following a refusal from the Municipal Council of L’Abbaye. The subject then returned to the table in 2017 with a new motion tabled in the three legislatures. The three municipalities accepted it and a steering committee launched the ongoing process in 2021.
