Palestinian State: Macron in favor of recognition at a “useful moment”, not under the influence of “emotion”

“I will not acknowledge emotion” regarding the State of Palestine, Emmanuel Macron said this Tuesday from Germany. “There is no taboo for France, I am ready to recognize a Palestinian state (…) but I consider that this recognition must come at a useful time. I will not make an acknowledgment of emotion,” he explained, alongside German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.

France had already affirmed last week that recognition of the State of Palestine was “not a taboo”. “This decision must be useful, that is to say allow a decisive step forward on the political level”, underlined the Minister of Foreign Affairs Stéphane Séjourné.

Earlier in the day, during Questions to the Government, Prime Minister Gabriel Attal had dodged a question in the National Assembly on possible recognition of a Palestinian state by France.

This Tuesday, Spain, Ireland and Norway officially recognized the State of Palestine. “This is a necessity to achieve peace,” said Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez. Oslo was satisfied with “a remarkable day”.

Israel quickly reacted by judging that Madrid was “complicit” in “calls for the genocide of the Jews”. The Israeli ambassadors from Ireland and Norway were also recalled by Tel Aviv.

According to a tally by the Palestinian Authority, 145 countries out of the 193 members of the UN recognize Palestine as a state.
