Invoking a “unhappiness”an 18-year-old high school student was arrested and placed in custody on sight Monday after stabbing his English teacher, whose life is not in danger, in his high school in Chemillé-en-Anjou, in Maine-et-Loire.

“What we are going to rule out is the whole religious motive, of radicalization (…), the only thing he expresses is an uneasiness in his life”declared during a press point, the public prosecutor of Angers, Eric Bouillard.

The young man “makes coherent statements” to the investigators.

“Laughing and laughing”

The victim “does not seem (…) to have been chosen in advance” And the student did not have “grievance” against her. She has had “simply the misfortune of being the first (teacher) of the day”he added.

“Experienced” and knowing “good job”the teacher “a little over 50 years old”has been in this establishment for more than twenty years, indicated the prosecutor and the academic director of the National Education Services, Benoît Dechambre.

Schooled for three years in the small comprehensive high school in Hyrôme where he resumed classes on Monday after an absence due to illness, the young man, presented as “laughing and laughing” by his comrades when he returned early in the morning, was unknown to the police or judicial servicesaccording to the magistrate.

He had not either “reported unfavorably within the establishment”, according to authorities in a statement released earlier. There is no “no notion of school harassment”according to the prosecutor.

According to the prosecutor’s account, upon his return to class, the high school student had “a courteous exchange” with her teacher about her absence from the previous days. The English class, which is taking place normally, is marked by a break. As class resumes in this class of 19 students, around 9:45 a.m., the Terminale student “will grab this teacher from behind and stab her in the face, causing panic in the class”.

This panic “will make him leave the class through the window (…) after having abandoned his weapon”. He is then arrested “very quickly” by a municipal police patrol.

“Too much pressure”

The knife, hidden in his school bag, was purchased on May 23, among other purchases. “He sees this knife and he buys it knowing that he was going to do something with it (…) Regarding his discomfort, he talks about too much pressure”according to the prosecutor.

“He was an introvert”, comments a 16-year-old second-year student. An investigation for “attempted murder” was entrusted to the Cholet research brigade but this qualification could change, indicated the magistrate.
