Coupe de France: violent clashes between PSG and OL supporters on a motorway toll booth

Clashes broke out between Parisian and Lyon supporters on a motorway toll booth, around forty kilometers from Lille (North) where the final of the French Football Cup is to be played this evening. At least one bus caught fire at the Fresnes-lès-Montauban toll gate (Pas-de-Calais), west of Arras.

“These are sporting events where you must above all be joyful and sporty. I condemn with the greatest firmness all violence,” pointed out Emmanuel Macron during a public walk in Tourcoing, not far from there, alongside Gérald Darmanin. “I hope things will go as normally as possible this evening,” he added, confirming that he would go to the stadium to watch the final.

The Northern Prefect immediately announced, on social networks, “the interruption of traffic on the A1 motorway in both directions of traffic at the Fresnes-lès-Montauban toll barrier”.

“Around a hundred individuals were involved and a bus caught fire. The highway is cut in both directions,” the Pas-de-Calais prefecture later indicated in a press release. A Source close to the matter had earlier told AFP that two buses had caught fire. It then reported 20 minor injuries, “treated upon their arrival at the stadium by Samu du Nord”.

Parisian fan buses were able to return to the stadium

As indicated by the Northern prefecture in a decree published on Thursday, PSG supporters who traveled by bus with supporters’ associations were instructed to meet in the parking lot located just after the Fresnes-lès-Montauban toll booth. , in order to be taken care of by the police who then had to escort them to the stadium.

According to several witnesses contacted by Le Parisien, buses of Lyon supporters were on the other side of the toll when the buses of PSG supporters arrived at their meeting point set by the prefecture. The clashes would have started immediately and the CRS present on site would have used tear gas on several occasions.

Around 7 p.m., after being separated for several tens of minutes, calm returned to the toll booth. The Parisian fan buses were able to return to the road towards the Pierre-Mauroy stadium.
