Significant financial problems for farmers in the region

The distress of the farmers who demonstrated on Thursday is also felt in the region. After a difficult year in terms of weather, farm owners are feeling significant financial pressures.

Like several other farmers in the province, Pierre Gauthier, who is a dairy producer in Saint-Félix-De-Kingsey, looks downcast due to the many challenges that plague his profession.

Mother nature is not on our side, last year it was execrable in Center-du-Québec. With interest rates which have jumped enormously over the past two years and the infrastructure that we are obliged to have in dairy production for animal welfare, we are having a hard time getting there.he said.

Mr. Gauthier says high interest rates reduce any prospect of investment in his farm to zero.

2024, and if we planned to do expansions later, with the interest rate and the cost of labor we cannot”,”text”:”We forget that for the year 2024, and if we planned to do expansions later, with the interest rate and the cost of labor we cannot”}}”>We forget that for the year 2024, and if we planned to make expansions later, with the interest rate and the cost of labor mean that we cannothe explains.

Mr. Gauthier has no trouble imagining that many farmers find themselves in a situation where they find themselves unable to pay their debts.

We are in survival mode, we try to save our skin without letting ithe said.

He hopes governments will help, but he questions how farmers are offered help.

They say they have programs, but the paperwork is so enormous, in all the questionnaires there is always a negative question as an answer, which means that you cannot get a grant or a subsidy.he laments.

He indicates that the government will have to do better if it wishes to resolve the crisis.

300papers”,”text”:”Currently, for the next generation, it absolutely requires a reduction in the interest rate to help the next generation. For producers who are, as they say, on the edge of the abyss, immediate help is absolutely necessary without having to fill out 300 papers”}}”>Currently, for the next generation, it absolutely requires a reduction in the interest rate to help the next generation. For producers who are, as they say, on the edge of the abyss, immediate help is absolutely necessary without having to fill out 300 papers.he adds.

He fears there will be terrible consequences if the government does not put aid in place quickly.

There are producers who will let go. There are producers who may be thinking about suicide and there’s no one who talks about it, it’s huge. Psychological health in agriculture is huge, it’s a big scourgehe indicates.

The situation hasn’t improved at all

The Union of Agricultural Producers, which surveys its members every year, notes a deterioration in the mental and financial health of its members.

According to Martin Marcouiller, president of the Mauricie component of the federation ofUPAthe situation of its members hasn’t improved at all.

What we are experiencing on the ground is that the financial situation has really deteriorated at the business level, in terms of distress too, there are many, many. There we are, as the government said, in a crisis in agriculturehe said.

In addition to problems related to weather and climate change, inflation has also hurt farmers badly.

All input costs have really increased, the price of diesel has also really increased, which means that our transportation costs have exploded.he explains.

Mr. Marcouiller notes that according toUPA, the proportion of farmers who have difficulty repaying their loan stands at 20%. And the proportion of farmers who are thinking of closing their business stands at 11%, an increase of one percentage point compared to last year.
