Two years of construction just outside Rochefort

Two years of construction just outside Rochefort

A road construction site outside Rochefort. Maintenance work is open to public inquiry until June 17. They concern the segment of the H10 located between the Rochefort cemetery and the CFF du Bregot level crossing. A 1.4 km section which is largely located in the forest.

We are heading towards two years of work on this segment which serves as a junction between Val-de-Travers and Neuchâtel. A construction site which will be interrupted in winter and which should be regulated either by lights, in two directions, or by a diversion. It could even be a combination of the two depending on the phases of the intervention and the way in which they are organized. Whatever happens, this work on this road where more than 4,000 vehicles travel per day will not begin before the end of the current work on the Colombier crossing, in order to avoid a double shift in traffic to this locality.

Improved security

All this for what ? To repair a coating that has deteriorated over time, but also to improve safety. The roadway will be widened to increase visibility and facilitate crossings and snow removal. A 1m80 cycle lane will be set up on the way up.

Even though there have been no accidents with serious injuries on this road since 2012, the incidents recorded show that a widened road would improve safety and better meet current standards. A safety barrier and a chaining place for heavy goods vehicles are also part of the project. As for the maximum speed, it will be lowered to 40 or 50 km/h depending on the sections.

A public inquiry always raises question marks regarding the filing of possible oppositions. What we do know is that the project includes exemptions, for example regarding clearing and the distance of constructions from the forest. Half a dozen owners are involved and the first approaches have been deemed successful. Likewise, the environmental issue does not seem too controversial insofar as the road route already exists, and it is simply a question of widening it.

This work is part of the road maintenance credit voted by the Grand Council in 2015. The Bridges and Roads Department is not yet able to budget the total cost of the project. /jhi
