The town of Carentan-les-Marais (Manche) is preparing to celebrate the 80e anniversary of the Landing. THE streets And shops of downtown are decorated And flagged for’event. One detail did not escape the British tabloids: the Union Jack was not displayed, as was the case 5 years ago.

The affair made noise across the Channel, at least on the websites of the celebrity press, taking offense at this oversight among the nations “involved in the resistance against the Nazis”. Legendary British phlegm has taken a hit…

Since then, the commune of La Manche has rectified the situation and british flag fleet alongside allied countries.

” This little mistake was not worth one controversy in the English tabloids, reacts its mayor Jean-Pierre Lhonor. The person who ordered the flags made the same order as for the 75e anniversary, that is to say the flags of the European Union and those of Canada and the United States. The supplier did not put the British flag in the delivery. »

Quite rightly so since the United Kingdom is no longer part of the EU member states since Brexit.

“Poppies” in the city

Nobody had obviously realized this oversight in the context of the anniversary of the Landings and the liberation of France by the allied nations.

“This error has been corrected. We will celebrate our British friends. We put “poppies” in Carentan and the town has never been so British. Like every year, we will play the God Save The QueenTHE God Save The King now, at the Cabbage Patch ceremony… We have never been so close to the English! »

Carentan can rest assured, the city does not hold the prize for the blunder of D-Day anniversaries.

During the 65e anniversary, under Sarkozy, France had forgotten to invite… Queen Elizabeth II. This faithful ceremonies of the Landings did not appear alongside the heads of state at Colleville-sur-Mer (Calvados); only Prince Charles was there. We are a long way from what some then described as “an embarrassing diplomatic-protocol imbroglio”. This affair was well worth a “so shocking!” »
