Nickel furnaces under threat of shutdown

In a press release, the union organizations of the SLN, Société Le Nickel, a mineral essential to the economy of New Caledonia, launched “an SOS to all employees of the company”. If loading activity does not resume in the coming days, the Doniambo ovens “will be irreparably damaged and permanently stop working”, they warn.

The largest private employer on the island is going through an unprecedented crisis, affected by the fall in the price of ore which has fallen by more than 45% in 2023, causing record losses for the groups operating the three factories on the archipelago. In early March, parent company Eramet reached an agreement with the French government to remove several hundred million euros of debt from its balance sheet and save the company.

Three senior officials to renew dialogue

If he arrived with three ministers – Gérald Darmanin, Sébastien Lecornu and Marie Guévenoux, in charge of Overseas Territories, Emmanuel Macron is also accompanied by three senior officials who make up, he said, the “contact team” to renew the dialogue. Eric Thiers, chief of staff of the Minister of National Education, was an institutional advisor to the president a few months ago. He worked on constitutional reform. Before being prefect of Doubs, Rémy Bastille was secretary general of the high commission in New Caledonia. Finally, Frédéric Potier, one of the general directors of RATP, worked on the Caledonian file in 2014 when he worked for Manuel Valls in Matignon.

A cyberattack “without long-term consequences”

The cyberattack that struck New Caledonia on Tuesday will have “no long-term consequences”, the French Computer Security Agency said on Wednesday, which calls for “extreme caution” regarding the origin of this attack which occurred after the announcement by President Emmanuel Macron of his visit to the archipelago.

This attack, “by denial of service”, lasted “a few hours” against the telecoms operator of the archipelago, said Anssi. “There is no intrusion into the information systems of the operator concerned, nor of its various clients.”
