snow removal work in progress at Col de la Bonette

The Bonnette-Restefond pass is closed all winter, but like every year in spring, work is undertaken to clear it of snow in preparation for the summer season.

“Here, it’s white paradise!” exclaims Christophe, member of the SACTP Olivero company based in Barcelonnette. For several days, he has been responsible for clearing snow from the road leading to the summit of the Col de la Bonette via Restefond. And he is progressing quickly, because by working 8 hours a day, he has already cleared the way for more than a kilometer.

“It’s an honor to be able to clear this road and what’s more, for the moment, I’ve had good weather. I’m not alone, sometimes there are marmots or deer who pass by to keep me company. I also meets people who come to go ski touring,” he explains to BFM DICI.

Significant snow removal

The Col de la Bonette is a strategic place for tourists, because it connects the Ubaye valley to that of Tinée which is located in the Alpes-Maritimes. The municipality of Jausiers is responsible for clearing snow from the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence side of the pass while the Métropole Nice Côte d’Azur is responsible for taking care of the Alpes-Maritimes side.

“The work is done depending on the snowfall. There are years when this is done naturally and years like this, where we disrupt nature a little to clear snow. Our desire is to open up as much as possible. quickly the pass in a spirit of economic development”, specifies Jacques Fortoul, mayor of Jausiers. For the municipality, the cost of snow removal work is estimated at 1,450 euros per day.

The Bonette-Restefond pass should reopen to motorists at the end of May. However, work will be carried out to better develop the road in anticipation of the Tour de France next July.
