Cherbourg-Manche airport was theone of the essential actors of the “Redoubtable” exercise this Wednesday May 22, 2024.

L’Medicalized Airbus A350-900 of the Air Caraibes company landed on the Maupertus tarmac at 12:55 p.m., coming from Orly (Val-de-Marne).

Exceptional device

For the site director, the day has a special character. “We welcome a device of exceptional scale because it is a XXL medical evacuation», describes Julien Alcacer.

This is the first time that this company and such a model have landed here. The airport becomes a link in the relief chain.

For the occasion, two air transport police came specially from Rennes to secure this initially commercial flight.

The “push”, this motorized traction system which allows a plane to be maneuvered on the runway, also came from Paris by road.

“Despite a runway 2,440 meters long and 45 meters wide,” adds the airport director, “this plane cannot turn around here alone. »

This is an exceptional exercise for an exceptional aircraft.

“Not much to envy”

As for the choice of the Air Caraibes company, it results from its responsiveness during the pandemic. At the time, one of its devices had notably repatriated seriously ill Covid patients between the Antilles and mainland France.

“The Airbus is transformed into a flying hospital,” explains Thomas Delomas, head of the Samu de la Manche.

Its mission is to project, over long distances, our serious burn victims today. In this configuration, he doesn’t have much to envy in terms of resuscitation once armed.

Each year, Maupertus airport participates in around ten evacuations of injured people and transport of organs, these on a smaller scale but very real.
